How can I order a JAS
device? ^
JAS devices are available by prescription only through your doctor
or therapist. All JAS devices are provided on a rental basis, except
for the JAS Finger device, which is a purchase item. If you are interested
in JAS therapy, ask your doctor or therapist if it’s right for
you. If your doctor or therapist needs more information about JAS products,
please ask him or her to visit this web site or call JAS at 800-879-0117.
Will using a JAS device
be painful? ^
No! JAS devices are degree-by-degree adjustable, and you control the
intensity of stretch during each session. For JAS therapy to be effective,
it is imperative that you maintain a low-intensity, pain-free degree
of stretch throughout your entire treatment session.
How do JAS devices work? ^
JAS devices are used to restore joint ROM by gently stretching soft
tissues surrounding joints that have stiffened because of injury,
surgery, or prolonged immobilization.
JAS devices provide Static Progressive Stretch (SPS) therapy, which
utilizes the force-loading condition known as stress-relaxation. This
is the same technique that therapists use when performing manual stretch
therapy in the clinic. SPS devices apply incremental, low-intensity
loads to the tissues at end range. Tissues respond to these prolonged
loads by stretching and remodeling to a new permanent length. Static
Progressive Stretch splinting is a proven therapy, and is well supported
by 11 years of successful clinical rsults and numerous published studies.
Do I have to sleep in
the JAS device? ^
No. JAS devices require just 30-minute sessions per day. Many people
confuse JAS Static Progressive Stretch therapy with dynamic splint
therapy,
which requires 6 to 12 hours of continuous
wear time in a 24-hour period. Patients are commonly advised to perform
dynamic splint therapy sessions during sleep rather than during waking
hours, so as not to interfere with activities of daily living.
Can I wear the device
longer than recommended for faster results? ^
It is not recommended. You should achieve excellent ROM gains with
a 90 minutes per day wearing schedule. Clinical experience with JAS
devices has shown that longer treatment sessions can produce symptoms
of inflammation and pain, with no better ROM gains.
I have questions about
using my JAS device. Where can I get help? ^
Look in the Instructions of
this site for initial fitting instructions, and fitting and use videos.
If you still have questions after reviewing
these materials, talk to your doctor or therapist, or contact your
local JAS representative at 800-879-0117.
How are JAS devices paid
for? ^
They are provided on a rental basis, and rental fees are covered by
most insurance companies. The JAS devices fall under the Durable Medical
Equipment benefit category of most insurance plans. The JAS customer
service department handles all billing procedures, including obtaining
insurance authorization, and notifies customers of coverage status
prior to shipping.
Does JAS substitute for
hands-on therapy? ^
No! JAS devices are intended to be one part of your home exercise program,
to assist you in making faster and steady gains in joint ROM. Your
doctor or therapist will instruct you on your complete home exercise
program. Because JAS allows you to get effective ROM therapy at home,
your therapist has more time to address other rehab goals, such as
strengthening and functional re-education, during your therapy sessions.
Using JAS should help you progress through therapy and return to full
function in a shorter time period.
